Alhamdulillah, in the previous post I mentioned that there were three eeman boosters which completely transformed my life. We already discussed one of the three which was Tadabbur. Today we are looking at another eeman booster which is the study of the names and attributes of Allah Azza Wajal.
I used to know the list of the names of Allah Azza Wajal but my life changed when I started studying the names in more details. Every detail, every bit of information I acquired stuck with me and I was more and more aware of His presence in my life.
Allah Azza Wajal tells us in suratul Tawbah (ayah 24) that He is the priority!
Say, [O Muhammad], “If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger and jihad in His cause, then wait until Allah executes His command. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.”
To believe in Allah Azza Wajal is the first of the pillars of Eeman. To testify that Allah Azza Wajal is the Only One deserving to be worshipped in truth is part of the first pillar of Islam. Thirteen out of the twenty three years of da’wa of Rasulullah Salallahu Alayhi wa Salaam was focused on teaching about who Allah is, the Day of Judgment and the Hereafter. The greatest ayah of the Qur’an is ayatul Kursi as it describes who Allah Azza Wajal is. Suratul Ikhlas is a short surah but is considered a third of the Qur’an as it again describes Allah Azza Wajal. This is no trivial matter!

Unfortunately, the devil and our desires delude us into thinking that we are ok, that we are safe when we are away from Allah Azza Wajal. Blinded, we do not realize that it is a matter of life and death to make Allah a priority in our lives.
If we woke up and truly understood the reality of things we would understand that safety is only near Allah, safety is only when we cling to Allah, safety is only when we remember Allah, when we worship Allah, when we seek refuge in Allah Azza Wajal. As Sa’di said in his tafsir of suratul Hashr:
They fear creation which cannot produce benefit or harm for themselves or for others, more than they fear the Creator Who owns all harm, benefit, bestowing and depriving, that is because they are a people who do not know the true reality of things and cannot evaluate consequences. True understanding, in contrast, means to have fear of the Creator, hope in Him and love of Him surpass all other types of fear, hope and love, making the latter subservient to the former.”
Clinging to Allah Azza Wajal however is hard to do when we don’t know who Allah is and what He does for us in our lives.
Let’s consider just one attribute for instance, As Samee’. Knowing that Allah Azza Wajal is As Samee’ means knowing that He hears all sounds and understands all sounds. He hears and understands animals, babies, humans, the seen, the unseen…
He hears and understands the Mute. He hears our internal dialogue, He understands our deepest secrets.
Learning all of this, that He hears all at once, and understands all languages and that there is no limit to His hearing, transformed my relationship with My Lord. I quickly realized that He Alone can truly understand me as He is the Only One who can hear my thoughts and my intentions.
He is the Only One who can protect me, the Only One who can guide me, the Only One who can shower me with Infinite Mercy, the Only One who can show me the solutions to my issues and at the same time, the Only One who can decree my destruction if He wishes.
This led me to rely less on people and pushed me to speak with My Lord more, to share my worries, my fears, my flaws, my shortcomings, my frustrations, my pain, my grief with the All Hearing, All Knowing.
My du’as increased and became more meaningful, the more I learned about Him, Dhul Jalaali wal Ikram.
Long conversations with my Lord increased also, because I knew that He would never get tired of hearing me. I know that He has no restriction of time, He is never too busy to hear me. While everyone else is limited, Allah Azza Wajal is Perfect in all His attributes. He is the Most High, The Exalted, The Vast, The Limitless!
How do you feel, being a servant of the Most High? How does that affect your life, your sense of worth? How do you feel when you know that HE is the Only One who truly cares for you as His creation. How do you feel when you know that His Knowledge is Perfect, His Wisdom is Perfect, that He is the source of Love, The Most Generous, The Abundant Giver, The Forgiver, The Constantly Forgiving, The Forbearing, The One who grants with Perfect Wisdom. The Only One responsible for your existence!
SubhannAllah sisters, the reality of Allah Azza Wajal is beyond our limited understanding, yet, the little we learn about Him is enough to transform our lives.
When you know your Lord, you know Who you should fear and Who you should call on.
If you want to build a greater connection with your Maker, study His names and attributes in detail and watch yourself transform.
Here is some of our students’ feedback about our classes on the names of Allah Azza Wajal:
Salam aleykum sister Binta. I just did the name Al Waarith. Sister this name is a life changer for me . Am in love. K.D.
Assalamu Alaykum sister Binta, I really enjoy the class. My favorite name for now or so far is Al Jabbaar ( the mender, the fixer, the Only one we should truly fear, the one who fixes the affairs of his creation). A powerful name or attribute Maasha Allah. This is a name that truly resonates with me.” H.
I took a class on the names of Allah in the past, which was really good too, but what I like about this class at Al An for U is that you are a passionate teacher. Your passion as you explain the names truly inspires and motivates me. Also the pace of the class is good, ie students are not taught too many names in a day that one ends of forgetting. One of my favorite parts of the class is the reflection part where each name is linked to a question we all try to answer collectively. This makes the learning and understanding of the name very easy and it sticks with you.
