Are you seeking the light?

Bismillah,

How are you my dear sister?

Alhamdulillah, lately, I have been in awe of the name of Allah An Nur and the question I am asking myself now is: “How am I seeking the Nur of Allah in my daily activities?”.

This is a vital question to reflect on and answer right now because:

  • We have the sacred month of Rajab fast approaching.
  • Sins during the sacred month are more serious.
  • We are facing a pandemic reminding us that death is very near and therefore we should make the most of our NOW. Just today we buried yet another member of our community. May Allah have mercy upon our dead. Aameen.

Are we seeking the light of Allah that we will need in our grave, on the Day of Judgment, on the sirat?

On the Day of Judgment, the hypocrites will be asking the believers for light and the believers will tell them to go back to Dunya to get the light. That light they failed to seek in Dunya was the light of obedience, of salah, of reading and implementing the book of Allah, of staying away from sins, of tawbah, of sadaqah, of striving to please Allah, of tawheed, of eeman…

This is the light they failed to seek in this world and so they were deprived of it on the Day of Judgment even though in this life, they were seen and considered as Muslims. They even say to the believers in the Qur’an “Were we not with you?” Ya Rabb this question really scares me.

“On the Day you see the believing men and believing women, their light proceeding before them and on their right, [it will be said], “Your good tidings today are [of] gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein you will abide eternally.” That is what is the great attainment. On the [same] Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to those who believed, “Wait for us that we may acquire some of your light.” It will be said, “Go back behind you and seek light.”

And a wall will be placed between them with a door, its interior containing mercy, but on the outside of it is torment. The hypocrites will call to the believers, “Were we not with you?” They will say, “Yes, but you afflicted yourselves and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allah. And the Deceiver deceived you concerning AllahSo today no ransom will be taken from you or from those who disbelieved. Your refuge is the Fire. It is most worthy of you, and wretched is the destination.”

(Surah Hadid 57: 12-15)

Save us from hypocrisy Ya Mu’meen!

In suratul An Nur, we see the beautiful ayah in which Allah Azza Wajal tells us that He is the Nur of the heavens and the earth (24:35). The Scholars of Tafsir state that this ayah also shows how the Nur of Allah touches the heart of the believer and strengthens his or her faith. A few ayaat later (24:40) we see the opposite, we see what happens with the disbelievers and transgressors. For them, there is no light and they are in darkness upon darkness. In the tafsir of Ibn Kathir, there is this powerful and scary quote:

Sisters, we need to be busy building our light daily until Allah Azza Wajal calls us back to Him. I can’t stress this enough. May Allah grant us tawfeeq.

The sacred month Rajab is about 4 days away in shaa Allah. How do we make sure we don’t wrong ourselves in the sacred month?! How do we preserve and build our light?

Below are my suggestions:

🤲🏽 Du’a!!! First and foremost as we can’t worship Allah without His aid! Ask Ad Dayaan, Al Hakam, An Nur to help you submit to Him and to help you avoid what displeases Him. Ask Him to put Nur in your speech, in your sight, in your hearing, in your heart and all around you. (see the du’a of going to the masjid for the full du’a).

📖 Study what is prohibited so you know what to avoid and how to save yourself and your family.
In the membership club we are revisiting the book Al Kabair. The challenge is to cover one major sin every day until Ramadan and the book goes over 70 major sins!

🕐🕕 Schedule every hour of your day with beneficial activities so you don’t let boredom tempt you to waste your time on things that would go against you.

🚭🌸 If you have not done so yet, filter your company so that you are surrounded by perfumers and are far removed from the blacksmiths as per the hadith of Rasulullah Salallahu Alayhi wa salaam.

💭 Manage your thoughts, reframe negative ones and understand yourself a bit better so you are able to fight off your worst enemy who studies you so closely (shayton).

💭🤲🏽 Dhikr, remember Allah often, listen to lectures, cut out distractions and vain speech as much as you can.

Now is the time to get more serious sisters, a sacred month is nothing to play with. May Allah give us tawfeeq and grant us Ramadan. Laa howla wala quwaata illa billah.
